Sony Yay!, which was scheduled to go live on Tuesday, will mainly feature locally produced TV programs for kids and kids tv shows including animated shows such as Guru Aur Bhole, Sab Jholmaal Hai and Prince Jai Aur Dumdaar Viru, among others.

Sony Pictures Networks India says the channel is aimed at children aged 2 to 14, with company CEO NP Singh adding, "Needless to say, the Indian TV industry is at an interesting juncture; Freshness".

According to a recent report from the entertainment industry of consultancy KPMG India, local content accounts for 50 percent of the programming of major kids tv channels and cartoon channel such as Nick. This is probably why Sony Yay! It is also heavily based on the local rate.

SPNI's first foray into children's television space in India was with the launch of Animax channel on dish tv in 2004, offering Japanese anime content aimed at a slightly larger demographic group. However, Animax is scheduled to leave the air and will move to the SPNI SonyLiv digital platform, Singh told the industry news portal. "Anime is popular with a very small segment of the audience," Singh said. "It will take us to Animax and instead give [viewers] a chance to see Anime on SonyLiv."

As part of their marketing plans, Sony Yay! He has roped in the next Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff as his brand ambassador.

SPNI also recently launched Sony BBC Earth, a joint venture with BBC Worldwide for which actress Kareena Kapoor was registered as the brand's ambassador.
