DD gets Rs 142 crore for content upgrade

The empowered finance committee (EFC) of the information and broadcasting (I&B) on Thursday approved a proposal to infuse Rs 142 crore in DD News, DD Urdu, DD India and regional channels of Doordarshan. This will help Prasar Bharati produce over 15,000 episodes of new programming and earn DD a minimum of Rs 40 crore.

“The objective of the scheme is to create quality content with the purpose of increasing viewership and popularity of DD programmes. The scheme will enable DD to increase fresh content from 6 hours to 14 hours,” officials said.

However, nearly 57% of the amount will be spent on DD Urdu (Rs 80 crore), sources said.
These steps are part of the changes adopted by the Prasar Bharati board earlier this month.
Under these changes, Prasaar Bharati, including Doordarshan and All India Radio, will be run by five committees under the guidance of chairperson Mrinal Pande and interim chief executive Rajiv Takru.

In order to ensure quality content in the programmes, an evaluation committee for national channels will monitor the implementation of this project, sources said.
Even the I&B ministry will hold a review meeting of the progress made every month at the level of Joint Secretary.
