In an interview, CEO DD C Lalrosanga said that we planned to switch Freedish DTH to MPEG-4 from a MPEG-2 mode in two phases. The first phase will begin early next month.

Last year, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity) approved a proposal of ByDesign India to develop a conditional access system in India. ByDesign would support an amount of Rs 19.79 million rupees to receive the Divine in order to develop the new system in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

The model is completely built indigenously by ByDesign and this CAS system is meant for DVB-C setups. The CAS solution transmitters enable access to the services of the TV broadcasters and allow them to manage and expand their business models for subscription-based systems.

That is, however, the encrypted Freedish will remain free to air KU band dth in India. Besides helping to increase the number of channels on the platform, it will help Freedish to access the exact number of households that depend on Freedish as encrypted decoders (STB) will be delivered by authorised dealers.

Lalrosanga said rural data collection by the Research Council of the broadcast audience (BARC) India has demonstrated that the allegations of Doordarshan on its periphery are not badly done. BARC said the vote showed that both DD and Freedish had a wide range of viewers in semi-urban and rural areas across the country.

Lalrosanga added that many houses were gradually shifting to Freedish dth because they can get all of the entertainment in the amount of one-time purchase of a satellite TV set top box that they get as low as Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 of the price.

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar had earlier this year said that the goal was to reach 112 Freedish channels in one or two years.

Currently, there is no empty slot in DD Freedish because all the channels that were on the platform and whose license had expired they renewed them through 24 electronic auctions held last year.

It is interesting that the two newcomers to the platform Aaj Tak and Big Magic are paying channels but now they available in free to air TV mode only on Freedish.

Lalrosanga also added that DD has worked to available regional language films for primetime slots on weekends. In addition, the pubcaster is active thinking on the lines of a dedicated channel for children and aadult viewers. So, we can soon expect kids channel on DD freedish.
