The E-auction will be made by m/s. C1 India Pvt. Ltd., Noida, which also held the sale of Phase III FM radio auction on behalf of Prasar Bharati. DD refused to reveal the number of slots set for electronic auction, as officials claim that this leads to unhealthy practices.

Doordarshan formally announced last October that free Dish was able to carry 104 television channels and 24 channels would be added to the existing 80 channels after the release of the MPEG4 technology.

DD officials also confirmed that dd free dish channel list soon carries up to 250 channels.

'Digital India' and 'Make India', established (CAS ICAS) technology for DD Free Dish. ICAS (which is an initiative of the central government) presented in the auction held last month. The introduction of ICAS will offer improved visual experience.

DD officials told that the current viewers will continue to receive the 80 dd free dish channel of SDTV, but they need to buy Free Dish new set top boxes with ICAS to get new channels of the Free dish.

Although FreeDish will remain free to air TV mode but the viewers must register with DD Free Dish by buying new ICAS enabled set top box from dealers licensed by Doordarshan.

FreeDish was out with a modest bouquet of 33 channels in December 2004 and now has eighty television channels and 32 radio channels. This includes 22 channels of Doordarshan and two parliamentary, seven entertainment channels, 18 movie channels, 13 channels of news, seven music channels, three religious channels and eight channels of other genres. All stations of All India Radio are also back on the platform.

DD officials said that the implementation of ICAS and licensed original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of Doordarshan STB will provide a major boost to "make in India" and "India Digital". At present, most of the STB are imported. However, the introduction of ICAS help normalization of STB and encourage the production of quality STB in India.
