Plex server hardware: Plex's live TV service now also available via the web and Fire TV. Plex's live TV service, a service that offers cable cutters a way to watch and record live television through an antenna, is now available for use on the web as well as Amazon Fire TV. From the desktop, only the Live TV service is available again (the DVR was already compatible), but on Fire TV, you can use both the streaming TV service and the new DVR function. Plex Live TV was already available on Android TV, Apple TV, iOS, and Android.
Just out of the beta in August, Live TV is Plex's big bet to capitalize on the shift to online TV broadcasting, rather than through traditional cable and satellite TV providers. The company introduced last fall a DVR feature that allows Plex subscribers to record TV shows and movies from a TV tuner and antenna, connected to their plex server hardware configuration.
This summer, Plex added the ability to broadcast live television and later added the ability to pause, rewind and fast-forward through programs.
The solution is more a DIY alternative to pay for something like Sling TV, Vue, Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, DirecTV NOW, or others that offer live TV subscriptions via the Internet. However, Plex is limited only to free channels that can be obtained by air with an antenna. However, that's a lot of content, since you can pick up major broadcast stations like NBC, FOX, CBS, ABC, PBS, CW, and more without paying for cable.
To use the Plex service, you only need a Plex Pass subscription, plex cost is only $4.99 per month, much less than the entry point for most live TV subscriptions, which start around $20 per month and increase since you customize your package with add-ons and other functions. The subscription also includes access to other features, including a TV programming guide, Mobile and Cloud Sync, Premium Music, full access to Plex applications, parental control and much more.
The announcement comes shortly after Plex got into the hot water over a badly thought out change in the privacy policy that did not make it clear to users that plex server hardware was not spying on the contents of their video libraries. The company responded quickly to clarify the problem, but some users said they would go ahead independently.
That exodus may or may not have really happened, however - Plex's mobile apps are holding their current positions, more or less - a Top 150 Entertainment application on iOS and the application of 30 video players on Android.
