The best thrillers in Hulu

1) 10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane came out of nowhere when it was announced just two months before its launch (it had previously gone unnoticed as Valencia). During most of its execution time, it is a closed camera thriller about a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up after a car accident in a bunker belonging to a mysterious man (John Goodman). There is another man stuck with them (John Gallagher Jr.) whose allegiances are difficult to link. The film is a showcase for his young and talented director (Dan Trachtenberg). Links with Cloverfield proved divisive among the public but too good to get lost

2) Cloverfield (with the Showtime plugin)

Cloverfield is amazing. I understand the complaints about the aesthetics of the hand / found sequences, but I do not listen to them. From concept to execution, Cloverfield is a marvel. Say what you want about J.J. Abrams, but the man knows how to make an event film. He also has a good eye for talent. He accorded collaborators Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), both masters of the genre. Cloverfield is much more frightening than you think for a monster romp. And now that there is a Cloverfield Cinematic Universe taking shape (10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016 and The Cloverfield Paradox this year), now is a good time to refresh yourself on how it all began.

3) The matrix

Seriously? Do you really need me to tell you how good Matrix is? How is the work more sublimemente cerebral, gloriously strange and well executed of the Wachowskis? How did the face of Hollywood change, setting the gold standard for science fiction and action films in the years to come? How did Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss create some of the most iconic movie characters of all time? How is the movie that makes you go, "Whoa"? Seriously, do I have to tell you all that? If the answer is yes, simply, I can not with you. Get out of here, go see this movie.

4) Borgman

best horror movies on Hulu, best tv shows on Hulu, funny movies on Hulu, top movies on Hulu, best scary movies on Hulu

Borgman, by Alex van Warmerdam, is a story about a modern coconut. The main character, masterfully played by Jan Bijvoet, slowly infiltrates the home and the life of an upper-class family simply by asking for a favour. It seems to be a vagabond who needs a bath, but this is not a typical thriller. There are no masked psychopaths or bumps in the night. Borgman is from another realm, a shifter, a trickster, and his growing control over the family is even more chilling given the lack of a real motive.

5) 13 murderers

The epic samurai film 13 Assassins by Takashi Miike, a new version of a film of the same name from 1963, is one of the best films of the Japanese master. It is a group of assassins (as one might guess from the title) who come together in an attempt to kill the odious Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu. The first half of the film is restricted as the team meets and forms its plan, but the climactic battle of the film compensates for the accumulation and rewards the audience's patience ten times (thirteen times?). They are approximately 40 minutes of the chaos of immaculate action. It is a pure spectacle that will leave you breathless.

6) Zodiac

Zodiac 2007 is a film about obsession as much as Zodiac Killer. David Fincher does a great job recreating the panic and anxiety that gripped Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The first part of the movie sounds like a horror movie before becoming Something even more tinkling and is anchored by the strong performances of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Jake Gyllenhaal. Zodiac is Fincher working in his wheelhouse and at the height of his powers.

7) I saw the devil

This South Korean thriller confronts two of the country's best-known actors (Choi Min-Sik and Lee Byung-hun) as police and serial killers, respectively. It is a story about cat and mouse, or maybe the cat and the cat is more appropriate, since Byung-hun traces and tortures implacably the man (Min-Sik) who killed his wife. The film is directed by master Kim Jee-Woon, so you're in good hands. I Saw the Devil is brutal and provocative, and if you have the stomach for it, it is well worth looking.

8) The Crow

This 1994 movie may seem campy with today's superhero movies, but no remake can reproduce the oppressive darkness of The Crow. The personification of Brandon Lee of Eric Draven, a man who returns from death to avenge his murder and the rape and murder of his fiancée, is perfect, and even more tragic by the accidental death of Lee on set. Director Alex Proyas does not let in the light, drawing a world where evil waits in every corner and the superhero cannot save everyone. But as Draven assures his young friend Sarah: "It can not rain all the time."

9) Manhunter

The original film by Hannibal Lecter, the 1986 Michael Mann thriller, takes the 1981 novel by Thomas Harris Red Dragon and bathes it in blue. Mann, who came from Miami Vice, stylized the adaptation, giving the story of FBI profiler Will Graham and serial killer Thomas Dolarhyde a glacial and dreamy quality. While the two men are hunting, a narrative structure for future Mann films (Heat, The Insider) is focused.

10) Arrival

The aliens are randomly displayed and placed strategically throughout the world, and humans fall into the complete panic in response. Most of the films would take this configuration and offer a festival of action that destroys the city. Director Denis Villeneuve and writer Eric Heisserer point to something more thoughtful and empathetic. It's a movie about understanding and listening. This science fiction thinker is one of the best films of the decade.

11) Children of Men (with Showtime plug-in)

The dystopian masterpiece by Alfonso Cuarón is one of the great science fiction films of the new millennium. Based on P.D. James' novel is set in a world where women cannot be pregnant and humanity is looking towards extinction. Until they find a pregnant woman and a small group, led by Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Chiwetel Ejiofor, they have to take her to a safe place. It is an intelligent movie anchored by pieces of action that leave you speechless.

12) Mom and dad

Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair stepped out of the depths in Brian Taylor's 2017 comedy thriller about a mysterious event that causes parents to want to kill their children. That presumption alone makes this movie an acquired taste, but Mom and Dad also give Cage the room to go completely up (like the scene in which he destroys a pool table while they sing "The Hokey Pokey"). murderous fury. Cage does not dominate the movie. In fact, there are actually some emotional and introspective moments between him and Blair.

13) Let the right in

Let the right in

Children are lonely, and when you are poor and live in a small town, it can be even harder to find a good friend. It can lead to crazy things, like ignoring the fact that your new best friend is a vampire. The seductive tendrils of evil are a territory spent in horror, but Let the Right One addresses why friendship can blind even the most innocent with cold-blooded finesse. The American remake is fine, but the Swedish original is a masterpiece. Few films can cheat you to root a child who is in danger. Let the right one make you hope that you never leave your dark and new partner.

14) The Babadook

The Babadook

In Jennifer Kent's 2014 film, the mother is supposed to be the protector, but she could also be the monster. This tangled duality pushes The Babadook, a film that takes the idea of a bogeyman and draws a thick black line in the depths of our subconscious. Essie Davis is wonderful as Amelia, a single mother who is fighting for life with her troubled and nervous son. Their relationship begins to change after a child in a pop-up book begins to appear outside the pages and becomes a terrifying metaphor for pain and depression. Joins a handful of recent horror films (The Witch, It Follows, Ex Machina) in which women are not just prisoners or victims.

15) Bronson

Bronson on Hulu

The director of Drive and The Neon Demon, Nicolas Winding Refn has a penchant for exploring issues of masculinity and violence and has never done better than in this 2008 British film based on the story of the man considered the most violent prisoner in the country. In Bronson, Michael Peterson, 19, is sentenced to seven years in prison for stealing a post office. He ends up serving 34, three decades of which he holds in solitary confinement. During this time, Peterson adopts the alter ego of Charles Bronson (yes, as the actor), and the story just gets weirder from there. The center of everything is Tom Hardy in a performance that is like watching a star about to become a supernova.
